Garden Addition

Oh bother, I missed harvest Monday. I went out and harvested, took pictures, recorded it all, then never made it to the computer. Got too caught up with applesauce making and Dancing with the Stars! Here's what it looked like anyway. They were calling for frost north of us so I picked any tomato that had color on it, just to be safe. We thankfully didn't get any frost, but about 40 minutes north of us they did. And this week is nice and warm (mid-70s, and 85 Friday!) so I should get even more tomatoes out of the garden yet. And hopefully this warmth will help my fall plants grow. They sprouted, and haven't really done much since.

But that's all boring talk. You want to see the real action that's been going on around here. Here it is! That's my hunky farm boy tilling up my new garden! Due to his farm upbringing, he can't just relax on the weekend, he MUST get stuff done. Which on Saturday involved getting the ancient rototiller working then tilling up the new bed (you can see my work in the background. Obviously, I WASN'T mowing the lawn). On the right in my current garden, with the fall plantings in the foreground (all that dirt!) and my mess of tomatoes behind that. Both of these beds will turn into raised beds in the spring when I have the money to do that. I would actually like a whole bunch of little raised beds, but that farm boy is also lazy when it comes to things that aren't his projects, so he won't make me a bunch of small beds. So two large raised beds it will be.

But not only did he till the garden, he got a lot of the rocks out too! In the above picture, you can see a lot of the rocks he pulled out (between the two beds). We have really rocky soil, that's also very sandy! I wanted this bed tilled now so that I can start amending it now, especially because both beds will need lime. And I want to mix chopped leaves into the beds as well. It's pretty exciting knowing I have all this space to plant next year! Now I need to figure out what's going in!

Here's the final product, with both beds. My blueberry bushes ended up getting planted all the way to the right in the new bed. I'll leave them out of the raised bed since they need the acidic soil that the veggies don't. With those planted, that officially means all my new plants are in the ground! Except for the 100 bulbs I just bought the other day. That's a good project for tomorrow!
